Once seen as enablers of free speech and expression, these platforms are now linked with misinformation, polarisation, and online hate. Reporting and research on platforms’ practices have raised questions of accountability for an industry that is marked with secret algorithms and opaque governance practices.
The Markup is a not for profit organisation with the goal of focusing on data-driven journalism, covering the ethics and impact of technology on society. This session will discuss the challenges of reporting on Big Tech, Markup’s data driven approach for its journalism, and using tech for reporting on tech.
